wapchan is an anonymous message board i started back on new years 2022. it's focused mainly on retro "otaku" content, though there are other interest boards as well. i started it since there's relatively few places to discuss old anime in english on the internet. off the top of my head:

• reddit - most old anime subs are dead, and i'm not a fan of reddit mods
• 4chan's /a/ - used to post here a lot, but the site is a mess, and most posters there just aren't interested in this sort of stuff
• old forums - almost all dead or have really old userbases
• discord - information black hole, and not good for sustained discussions on topics
• facebook groups - do i even have to say why this isn't a good option?

the site attempts to be a homage to the internet forums of the past, though strucutred more like an imageboard. the site is generally SFW, though it does get hit by spam bots sometimes. i built the frontend myself, while the backend uses LynxChan, since there was no need to reinvent the wheel when a number of sites already use this (it has good moderation tools). i currently do all the frontend, backend and server work myself, as well as most of the moderation, though at some point i hope to hand this off to others if the site gets more traffic. it's a niche topic on a niche website format, but it's something i've enjoyed working on. in the first half of 2023 i did a total rewrite of the frontend (was previously based on a different site's theme and was very hacked together), and learned a lot about css writing all the different themes, which were designed to give each of the topic boards a unique feel.
